Take on Mt Kilimanjaro with Finding Your Feet – A Challenge Like No Other!
Ready to tick a big one off the bucket list? Join Finding Your Feet and our expert partners at Breaking Strain for the adventure of a lifetime – summiting Mount Kilimanjaro to support amputees across Scotland. This is a truly special one for us with the 2018 trek seeing our Cor become the first female quadruple amputee to complete the trek.
Think you’ve got what it takes?
We’ll be tackling the stunning Machame Route, known for its incredible scenery, varied terrain, and great acclimatisation. Set for June 2026, over six unforgettable days, you’ll trek through lush rainforests, rugged volcanic rock, and glacial peaks – all leading to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
This isn’t just a hike – it’s a physical and mental challenge. You’ll push your limits, share the journey with an amazing group including guidance from Breaking Strain’s experienced local guides, and come home with incredible memories, new friendships, and the pride of supporting a fantastic cause.

The Trek
-
Cost of the trek is £3300. This is payable by a non-refundable £350 deposit per person upon booking, which FYF pass straight onto Breaking Strain. The remaining £2950 cost of the trek is then payable in instalments to Breaking Strain.
Instalment dates are:
- £900: 36 weeks prior to the trek
- £900: 24 weeks prior to the trek
- £1150: 12 weeks prior to the trek
Fundraising aims
-
We ask that in addition to your costs, you aim to fundraise £1000 minimum per person to support the FYF amputee community.
-
Because of the costs FYF incur in booking your place, we ask that you raise your first fundraising amount of £150 by October 2025.
Extra costs to consider for your total budget:
Travel Insurance
You are recommended to purchase travel insurance at the time of, or shortly after, booking. You are responsible for ensuring that all activities you undertake during the trip are covered by your insurance policy including trekking to 6000 metres. This policy should also include a force majeure extension. If you have an insurance policy provided by your bank you may need to provide your account number and sort code instead of a policy number – contact your insurance provider for details.
Vaccinations
It is recommended that you get certain vaccinations before travelling, and we advise you receive advice from a travel clinic. There will be some vaccinations that could be available on the NHS.
Kit List
There is an expectation that you will provide all your own clothing and your sleep system for the trek (tents will be provided are included in your costs). You will be given a comprehensive kit list on sign up which includes all the equipment you will need to successfully undertake this challenge. There could also be some kit that can be hired locally, and this info will be provided by Lee of Breaking Strain after sign up.
To get an idea of what kind of kit you’ll be expected to bring, you can have a look through our kit list for our Kili 2018 climb here. Please note, that this is likely to different to the kit list you receive on sign up.
Tipping
Whilst the local guides, porters, cooks and drivers are paid a fair wage as approved by the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA) and Kilimanjaro Association of Tour Operators (KIATO), tips form an important part of the livelihood of the local crew who support the trek.
$250-300 cash is the recommended amount per trekker as a tip. This is paid to the lead guide on the final morning of the trek and distributed amongst their crew (Breaking Strain staff do not take any of these tips).
Personal spending money
Bring a little extra for souvenirs, drinks or any costs not included in the trip, including meals before the trek begins and once the trek is completed.
- Return flights from Edinburgh or London to Tanzania, and airport transfers
- Hotel accommodation on first night arrival and final night in Moshi
- Three meals a day whilst on the trail and all meals in accommodation
- Six days trekking the Machame Route with experienced local qualified guides, cooks and porters
- Two-person tents (you will also receive a comprehensive kit list to bring your own gear on top of)
- Two pre-trip information sessions covering kit, training, trail conditions and safety
- 24/7 support from the Breaking Strain team
Entry to Tanzania requires a valid visa. This can be obtained from the Tanzanian High Commission online in advance of the trip.
This is going to be a trip of a lifetime… and fundraising treks like this are vital for our charity. They help us keep offering clubs, activities and support that improve fitness, mental health and personal growth for people living with amputation and limb absence.
We’re asking each participant to raise a minimum of £1,000 in sponsorship. Because of the costs we incur when booking your place, we ask that your first £150 is raised by end of December 2025.
As a wee reminder of what you’ll be supporting, and how to tell your Kilimanjaro trek supporters, we’ve put together a little info for you to share about what we do. You can feel free to use as much or as little as you like, and we always recommend adding in what this challenge means to you personally.
If you’re asking local companies to sponsor you – there might be local amputees who attend our Clubs in your area which will allow you to tell the companies that they’re supporting local amputees. Be sure to let us know what area you’re in to check what we’ve got going on nearby and how many amputees we support near you – it always helps having a local connection!

Top tip – open one of the videos, copy the video’s URL, paste it into a post on social along with a link to your fundraising page and a request for donations.
Minimum fundraising amount is £1,000. There are lots of ways you can fundraise, and we can help with it all. Get in touch with our Fundraising Manager Zoey at [email protected] if you want to have a chat about it, but here’s a few suggestions.
- Just Giving page (we can help you set one up if you’re not sure how)
- Share this on social, e-mail footers and with all your friends, family & workmates.
- If you’re sharing on social, it’s best to put a wee message out with it, rather than just share the link on it’s own.
- People tend not to donate the 1st time they see it, so share it regularly… maybe with updates on your planning / training?
- If you work for a company with an intranet site, see if you can share it there.
- Approach local companies to ask for sponsorship
- We can give you some blurb about FYF and how our Troopers will benefit from their support. You could have their logo printed onto your trek gear and share photos from the trip which you / they can share on their social platforms for promotion.
- Some companies will match fund your fundraising total, it’s worth asking your own company if relevant, or any others.
- Hold an event
- If you’d like some ideas for your event, you can get in touch with our Fundraising Manager Zoey at [email protected]. As well as having a load of suggestions, Zoey can also help make sure you have FYF flyers, posters, balloons, banners etc to help promote your event and brighten it up.
- Paper sponsor forms
- You can download a sponsor form here to take around your workplace, friends, family or whoever you can get a hold of really!
- When you’ve collected the money, please return the sponsor forms to our office, or send clear photos of them to Zoey at [email protected].
- There’s 3 preferred options to get the money to us:
- (1) Pay it into your own bank account and do a bank transfer to us. (CAF Bank, sort code: 83-91-46, account no: 20401236) Please let Zoey know if you’re doing this so we can look out for the payment and assign it to your fundraising total.
- (2) Pay it into your bank, then transfer it to us using our donation form. Please add a note to tell us this money is from your sponsor form collection.
- (3) Pop in to the office and hand in the cash. (The team all work part time in the office, please check someone’s in before you come)
- Poster promoting your fundraising
- We can give you a poster with a QR code to your fundraising page, for people to make donations. You can ask your workplace, local businesses etc to put a poster up.
- Local press
- If you’d like us to make contact with your local press to ask them to do a story on your fundraising, speak to Jen of our Marketing Team at [email protected].
