“Being an amputee does not stop me.” Says Trooper Barbara, who is proudly busy.
After a head-on car crash and 3 years of trying to save her foot, Barbara made the decision to have a below-knee amputation.
“One of the hardest parts was losing my heels. That really broke my heart.” With the right prosthetic with movement in the foot, Barbara is now back wearing her heels, something that helped her feel like herself again.
“Finding Your Feet helped me get myself back (thank goodness), I would not have been here and now I am trying to give back and help others.” Barbara is now one of our Peer Support Volunteers – making hospital visits to new amputees and calls to check in with Troopers across the community.
“It gave me confidence, friendships and a place where I belong. I’ve made so many friends, I’ve even gained new nieces and nephews. It feels like one big happy family.” Barbara says of the difference Finding Your Feet has made to her.
We’re sharing Trooper stories like Barbara’s to show the real, everyday experiences behind life after amputation or limb difference and to help others feel understood and less alone.
If you feel comfortable sharing your own story, we would love to hear from you.
